The United States Tennis Association has announced the prize money details for the 2020 US Open Grand Slam event, in an update on the US Open website.
The total prize money for the 2020 US Open will be $53.4 million, which is approximately 95% of the record prize money that was distributed for the 2019 US Open event.
In the men’s and women’s singles draws, first-round prize money has increased by 5 percent from 2019 – from $58,000 to $61,000 – a further indication that they are trying to provide more money towards players in the early rounds.
The men’s and women’s singles winners will each get $3 million in prize money with the doubles winners getting $400,000 each. The 2019 winners received $3.85 million in singles and $740,000 in doubles. Mike Dowse, USTA Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, commented, “We’re proud to be able to offer a player compensation package that maintains nearly 95 percent of the prize pool from 2019.
The prize money distribution for the 2020 US Open is the result of close collaboration between the USTA, WTA and ATP, and represents a commitment to supporting players and their financial well-being during an unprecedented time”.
Some of the top players have decided to skip the tournament, including men’s World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, of Spain, Australian Ash Barty and Nck Kyrgios and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Some of the other players are also expected to make a final decision on whether they will play the event in the coming days.
The USTA has also announced that it will give a total amount of $7.6 million towards helping players who have been affected by the reduced number of tournaments this year.
